THE MONKMAN METHOD

THE MONKMAN METHOD

A Human-Centered Approach to Rhythm, Musicianship & Growth

Music is more than notes — it’s a language, a physical experience, and a way of thinking. At Monkman Studios, we teach rhythm and musicianship through a method that is adaptable, intuitive, and deeply human. Every learner deserves a path that makes sense, builds confidence, and nurtures creativity.

Our Educator Philosophy

At Monkman Studios, we believe that learning music should feel meaningful, achievable, and joyful. Our teaching philosophy is rooted in the idea that the best musicians aren’t just skillful — they are curious, adaptable, confident thinkers who understand rhythm from the inside out.

  • Adaptability — meeting each student where they are
  • Real Musicianship — learning rhythm as sound, movement, and time
  • Progress That Makes Sense — steady improvement built on understanding
  • Courage & Confidence — learning to tackle challenges through music
  • Patience & Process — celebrating every step of the journey

Our goal is simple: to help each student become the most musical version of themselves.

Core Values of The Monkman Method

Adaptability

Every learner is different. We adjust pacing, tools, and approach to match how each student naturally understands rhythm and sound.

Real Musicianship

We teach the skills musicians use every day: listening, feeling pulse, creating phrasing, and understanding how rhythm fits inside time.

Progress That Makes Sense

Small wins lead to big growth. We emphasize clarity, repetition, and intuitive steps that build true musical confidence.

Courage & Confidence

Music teaches more than rhythm. Students learn perseverance, problem-solving, and the courage to try again — skills that carry into life.

Mind–Movement Connection

There is a direct connection between speaking a rhythm and playing it. We tap into this natural link to build phrasing, flow, and accuracy.

A Journey We Take Together

Music is collaborative. We celebrate progress openly, work through challenges together, and embrace each milestone with gratitude.

How We Teach Rhythm

Hear It • Say It • Play It

1) Hear It (Sound Awareness)

Using playful word-rhythms like pear, blueberry, and watermelon, students learn what rhythm feels like. This taps into natural language instincts and makes rhythm intuitive from day one.

2) Say It (Internal Understanding)

When students speak rhythms aloud, they begin to understand phrasing, flow, and musical shape. This creates confidence and physical rhythm literacy.

3) Play It (Spatial Beat Awareness)

We connect sound to structure using counting:

1 2 3 4  •  1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

Students learn timing, subdivision, and beat placement — how rhythms live inside a measure. They begin to see rhythm in their mind, even before reading notation.

What Students Gain

Clarity

They know why rhythms work — not just how to imitate them.

Confidence

They build success through steady wins and encouraging guidance.

Musicianship

They learn rhythm as movement, sound, and time — not just symbols.

Creativity

They create patterns early, which develops musical thinking.

Life Skills

Patience, resilience, problem-solving, courage — music trains the mind as much as the hands.

What Families Experience

  • A clear path forward — what we’re working on, why it matters, and how it connects to future musicianship
  • A supportive environment — mistakes aren’t problems; they’re progress
  • A method that works at home — tools families can use between lessons (no instruments required)
  • Real progress you can hear — steadier rhythm, stronger confidence, more musical playing

A Message from Jesse

“I created the Monkman Method to give students a way to understand rhythm deeply — not just to play the right notes, but to feel music with confidence and clarity. Every student deserves a teacher who adapts to them, celebrates their progress, and helps them grow in a way that makes sense. Teaching is a privilege, and I’m honored to walk this musical journey with every learner.”
